Life is worth it. So, live it! Even through certain sorrows, we reach pleasure in life. Getting pleasure out of the actions and likes is part of what makes us human beings. Being a good one includes enjoying pleasures every day. We have to learn to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
The most we can get in life is Joy. Yes, with a capital letter because I think is one of the ultimate goals of life: to ENJOY it... Whatever we do should bring us joy. However certain things may give us just the opposite: sorrow. But we need to learn to live with that too...
With mildness in our heart and determination we can enjoy life fully.
As students, we need to find joy in what we study, if not it will be difficult to feel gratified. As teachers, we need temperance to help our students learn not only about the subject but also values that will help them be better human beings... We can help them find some joy in life... Quite an utopian thought, though... But not impossible

In your view, can we teach people to "enjoy the simple pleasures of life", L@u?
And do you see passion as a deterrent to full enjoyment of life? (you set "mildness" as a "requirement",that's why I ask)... Can't remember whether you sided with the intuitionists or the emotivists in our class discussions... :-P
Finally, why do you think it "a utopian dream" to help students become better human beings?
Sorry I couldn't help asking so many questions this time! Feel free to answer only one or two of them if you prefer it so!
Warmly,
Gladys
Hi Gladys!!
Teaching to enjoy the simple pleasures of life is a bit difficult. What we as educators can do is to show our students what these may be... They will decide if they wish to enjoy them or if they choose others.
Both passion and mildness are necessary to enjoy life, but sometimes it depends on the moment which of the two to apply most. I think I'm mostly on the intuitionsts' side, but sometimes also on the emotionists... I'm VERY emotional sometimes :-P
To answer the last one, I think it can almost be an utopy to help students be better human beings because, even if you try as hard as you can, it also depends on their will to improve as people... It is NOT IMPOSSIBLE, but it really is hard work... Nowadays, children are very sceptical and it has become quite difficult to try and transmit values...
